Training on Data Use for HIV Program Management in Nigeria

May 03, 2022

Data collection and monitoring is one piece of effective program execution. Equally important are effective interpretation and communication; both are needed to activate the power of data to transform situations and achieve results.

Following the recalibration of HIV estimates based on NAIIS 2018 findings, PEPFAR initiated the Surge strategy in selected states. UMB provides technical expertise and data management services to the IHVN-led Surge project in three states (Rivers, Nasarawa, FCT). UMB has created a functional data system at the facility and community levels for data monitoring and display, using enhanced data wallboards, to support SURGE’s goals.

To build the capacity of the UMB Surge staff to better perform their roles – presenting data with enhanced clarity for decision-making –  the Center for International Health, Education, and Biosecurity (Ciheb) Nigeria conducted a 5-day training workshop from March 14 to 18 in Lagos, Nigeria. The workshop addressed a variety of functionalities, including using Power BI, a data management software application, for data visualization, spatial visualization of data, data quality assessment. Staff are also now empowered to deliver presentations and develop manuscripts using the data.

Post-workshop, Ciheb Nigeria is poised to better fulfill its mandate to meet Surge’s goals and targets more effectively and efficiently—a key development in achieving epidemic control.
