Data Analytics Visualization Tool for Disease Surveillance Launched in Nigeria

September 20, 2022

Representatives from various health agencies within Nigeria participated in the official launch of the Data Analytics Visualization Tool (DAVT) on September 1st, 2022, in the Federal Capital Territory.

As part of the Secure Nigeria project, implemented by the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) and UMB Nigeria, DAVT was developed to institutionalize data quality management. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and public health emergency operation centers (PHEOCs) at the state level will use DAVT processes for improved surveillance activites.

Surveillance is essential to disease management and response, helping countries monitor and evaluate emerging disease trends. Information gathered contributes to the continuous, systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health-related data needed to plan, implement, and evaluate public health practice. DAVT also facilitates demand for more robust case-based data reporting. Previously existing surveillance applications, such as the Mobile Strengthening Epidemic Response System (mSERS app), and the centralized Surveillance Outbreak Response Management and Analysis System (SORMAS) can integrate with DAVT to meet this need.

DAVT will enhance the ability of the country to convert surveillance data to information for timely public health response and strategic decision-making. This is critical in strengthening the functionality of a robust surveillance system. Currently, the DAVT dashboard displays analytics for six prioritized diseases: COVID-19, cerebrospinal meningitis, Lassa fever, typhoid fever, malaria, and diarrhea with dehydration, with a goal to expand to all diseases by 2023.
