Application Process

Eligibility

To apply for the 2024-2025 program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a mentor at a US institution within our consortium (University of Maryland Baltimore, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Pittsburgh, Baylor College of Medicine). US mentors are affiliated with specific LMIC sites. Please check with the US mentor and Maggie Whittington to ensure your mentors are aligned.
  • Have a mentor at one of our approved LMIC sites where you will spend your program year who is aware of your Fogarty application
  • Ability to dedicate 40 hours per week to research for 12 months at the international fellowship site. Outside clinical duties are allowed during this period
  • Available to begin fellowship in July 2024.
    • LMIC trainees will spend at least one month of their fellowship at one of the US consortium universities to participate in additional training and fellowship activities. This should be discussed and outlined with mentors in your timelines and mentorship plan.
  • Applicants can only have one application reviewed by a Fogarty Global Health Program for Fellows and Scholars consortium at a time. For a list of other consortia, please visit: https://www.fic.nih.gov/Programs/Pages/scholars-fellows-global-health.aspx

US Citizens/Permanent Residents

Postdoctoral trainee eligibility:

  • have completed a doctoral/terminal degree or equivalent in the last 8 years (PhD, MD, DDS, DVM, etc.).
  • completed a doctoral/terminal degree and are currently in or have recently completed a post-doctoral fellowship (T32 fellowship, medical residency, etc.) or advanced degree (MPH, MSc, etc.) within the last 8 years.
  • will have completed a doctoral/terminal degree or equivalent by July 2024.

Predoctoral trainee eligibility:

  • currently enrolled in a doctoral/terminal degree program and have completed at least one year of studies.

You are NOT ELIGIBLE to apply if you:

  • have not completed a doctoral/terminal degree and are not currently enrolled in one
  • have completed a master’s level degree, but not a doctoral/terminal degree.
  • are a tenure-track professor. Non-tenure track professors are eligible.

LMIC Citizens/Permanent Residents

Postdoctoral trainee eligibility:

  • have completed a doctoral/terminal degree or equivalent in the last 8 years (PhD, MD, MBChB, MMed, etc.)
  • completed a doctoral/terminal degree and are currently in or have recently completed a post-doctoral fellowship or an advanced degree (MPH, MSc, etc.) within the last 8 years.
  • will have completed a doctoral/terminal degree or equivalent by July 2024.

You are NOT ELIGIBLE to apply if you:

  • have not completed a doctoral/terminal degree within the last 8 years.
  • are currently enrolled in a doctoral/terminal degree program but, will not complete your degree by July 2024.
  • have completed a master’s level degree, but not a doctoral/terminal degree.

Applications for the 2024-2025 cycle are now closed. Applications for the 2025-2026 cycle will open in Summer 2024. Please check back then.

What to prepare for your application (all materials below are described in the PDF application form):

  1. Personal statement
  2. Research proposal
  3. Mentorship plan
  4. IRB & ethical approval plan
  5. Additional funding (if applicable)
  6. Timeline
  7. Budget
  8. NIH-style biosketch
  9. Educational transcripts
  10. Two letters of support from LMIC mentor and U.S. mentor (see criteria below)
  11. Biosketch of US mentor(s)
  12. Letter of commitment (if applicable)

Criteria for the letters of support

Applicants must submit one letter from their U.S. mentor and one letter from the LMIC mentor. The applicant should work directly with their mentors to have them describe in their letter:

  • The plan for the fellowship
  • Strengths of the applicant
  • Mentor's experience in mentoring postdoctoral fellows
  • Confirmation of commitment to support the candidate during their fellowship

Letters of support may be attached with the application or may be sent directly to awhittington@ihv.umaryland.edu (by the due date) with the subject "INSIGHT Review committee LOS." 

Completing an Application

Please complete your application by filling out the REDCap survey with all materials requested and described. A complete application includes the REDCap survey with all files attached. Deadlines:

November 12th, 2023 5PM EST: Regular application deadline. ALL applications must be received in full by this time to receive consideration.
