A Leader in Cervical Cancer Screenings
Partnership for Advanced Care and Treatment (PACT) Endeleza has supported HIV programming since 2016, but the program scope previously did not include cervical cancer screening. This changed in October 2020 when PACT Endeleza expanded its range of services to screen all women of all reproductive age groups.

Preliminary results of national HIV survey (BAIS V) demonstrate Botswana’s remarkable progress achieving HIV epidemic control
Preliminary results from the fifth Botswana HIV/AIDS Impact Survey (BAIS V), announced today by the President, His Excellency Dr. Mokgweetsi E. K. Masisi demonstrate that for the first time at a national level among adults aged 15-64, Botswana has exceeded the 2020 UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets which call for 90 percent of all people living with HIV (PLHIV) to be aware of their status, 90 percent of those aware of their status to be on antiretroviral treatment (ART), and 90 percent of those on ART to achieve viral load suppression.

Remembering Dr. Toma Guberski
With tremendous sadness, Ciheb mourns the passing of Thomasine “Toma” Guberski, PhD, CRNP, a decades-long pillar of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and Institute of Human Virology (IHV) community. Dr. Guberski, a PhD trained nurse practitioner, dedicated much of her career serving as part of a multidisciplinary team of HIV experts supporting the development of comprehensive care and treatment models to provide antiretroviral therapy (ART) to HIV/AIDS patients in Baltimore and across sub-Saharan Africa, benefitting millions of lives.

Kenya Country Programs Complete Five Years of Impact in HIV Services

Ciheb Nigeria to Study Adverse Events Following COVID-19 Vaccination
A Cohort Event Monitoring survey to examine and evaluate the safety of individuals following COVID-19 vaccinations in Nigeria has begun in five states of Bauchi, Edo, Enugu, Kaduna, Lagos, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. This observational surveillance program’s purpose is to monitor safety signal detection following the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines in the country.

Data Demand and Information Use through STATA Training in Nigeria
Ciheb Nigeria, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health, recently facilitated a training to promote a culture of data demand among stakeholders to encourage the use of data on the National Data Repository (NDR) to track program outcomes and impact. The training also aimed to build the capacity of the stakeholders to maximize the use of data on the NDR for research.

Field Implementation Finishes in Botswana's BAIS V Survey
The Fifth Botswana HIV/AIDS Impact Survey (BAIS V) has successfully completed six months of field implementation, and teams have demobilized out of the field. BAIS V reached nearly 20,000 participants, more than 13,500 households, and completed more than 10,000 household interviews.

ZAMPHIA Prepares to Restart After Election Pause
After a one month pause, the Zambia Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (ZAMPHIA) is prepared to restart field data collection in September. The survey now enters its final stage of field work following a break in August for the 2021 Zambian general elections.

In Kenya, Ciheb Efforts Recognized in Nairobi County CQI Awards
During the summer, the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) held its annual Health Service Delivery Awards to recognize best-performing health facilities in Nairobi County. Facilities supported by PACT Endeleza won awards in all categories they participated in. NMS evaluated facilities based on their performance in continuous quality improvement metrics.

Second Phase of COVID-19 Seroprevalence Survey Underway in Nigeria
The second phase of a COVID-19 seroprevalence study in Nigeria has begun in Kano State in Northwest Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The survey, which was previously conducted in Enugu, Gombe, Lagos, and Nasarawa States in the first phase of the COVID-19 epidemiological survey completed last fall, will help estimate COVID-19 prevalence across the two new states.

ZAMPHIA Survey Begins Fieldwork
The Zambia Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment (ZAMPHIA) is now underway! The survey was originally scheduled to take place in 2020 but was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that COVID-19 in Zambia has improved, the Government of Zambia, in partnership with Ciheb and others, is moving forward with the relaunch of this PEPFAR-funded assessment and have put in place all necessary safety measures to protect staff and participants. ZAMPHIA is the second ever population-based HIV impact assessment performed in Zambia.

HIV/AIDS Survey in Botswana Enters New Phase
The Fifth Botswana HIV/AIDS Impact Survey (BAIS V) has now been in the field for nearly two months and has completed the first wave of implementation. Approximately 3,800 households have been surveyed across the project’s three regions (see map below). This represents approximately one-third of the 13,564 households that will be surveyed nationwide before the project concludes this summer.

Ciheb-Kenya on the Front Lines of the COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout
Ciheb-Kenya, our local Kenyan partner, has been working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Kenya Ministry of Health, and the National Vaccines and Immunization Programme (NVIP) to support COVID-19 vaccine preparedness through the ongoing Technical Assistance to Ready and Accelerate Capacities of Public Health Programs in Kenya (TRACK) project. Kenya received its first shipment of vaccines several weeks ago and has been moving ahead quickly. As of April 21, a total of 721,509 persons have been vaccinated against COVID-19 countrywide.
