Mentored International Exchange

Ciheb currently has three programs for mentored international exchanges:  the International Preceptorship in HIV and Infectious Diseases (IPHID), the Global Health Service Rotation, and the Fogarty Epidemiology Research Training for Public Health Impact.

International Preceptorship in HIV and Infectious Diseases (IPHID)

With the understanding that the chronic, complicated nature of HIV/AIDS requires that each country possess an adequate, local base of expertise and high technical capacity, the IPHID program was developed to provide country-level practitioners, technical leaders, and policy makers with rapid, high-level, advanced training in the comprehensive management of HIV and related illnesses.

Since 2006, the Institute of Human Virology and Ciheb in collaboration with the University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical Center, have provided immersive, hands-on practical training to clinicians, academics, and country technical experts from all over the world. This program provides intensive, advanced-level training in the clinical management of HIV and other infectious diseases. Incorporating cutting-edge research from IHV, leading clinicians and educators are able to provide training under a preceptorship model that takes advantage of a rich, multifaceted patient population served by one of the leading infectious disease programs in the United States. To date, nearly 100 participants have traveled to Baltimore for this program.

Global Health Scholars

Ciheb works with the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia—the national referral hospital also affiliated with the University of Zambia (UNZA) School of Medicine—to provide UMB students, Internal Medicine residents, and Infectious Disease (ID) fellows with an interest in global health an opportunity to obtain clinical experience in tropical infectious diseases in a resource-limited setting. Trainees typically spend one month in country under the supervision of two ID-trained UMB faculty providing inpatient ID consultation service, attending didactic lectures, and exchanging knowledge from their experience.

Fogarty Epidemiology Research Training for Public Health Impact Program (Epi-Nigeria)

Since it takes an average of 17 years for research to translate into practice, the importance of implementation and dissemination science is evident. Through Epi-Nigeria, UMB offers: 1. an online mentored distance-learning Master of Science in Health Sciences and 2. a PhD in epidemiology with distance and Baltimore-based components.
