Caring for the Caregivers: Mental Health and Healthcare Workers in Kenya

The healthcare field is strenuous, regularly exposing its workers (HCWs) to stressors that can affect their mental health. As defined by the World Health Organization, mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. Stressors that can take a toll on mental health include: heavy workloads, lack of resources, poor work environments, irregular salary payments, or lack of salaries. The COVID-19 pandemic further compounded the stressors in the work environment for HCWs, limiting resources and staffing availability to serve a vast population. With one in every four healthcare professionals in Kenya exhibiting signs of depression, it was necessary to address the mental health of HCWs. 

Untreated mental health in the workplace is costly, leading to burnout, excessive leave, staff loss, and low productivity. These possible effects incentivizes organizations to address the mental health of their HCWs to ensure optimum function of services and client satisfaction. 

In July, the Ciheb-Kenya’s CONNECT program held a two-day mental health workshop targeting all health management teams at sub-county and Level Four facilities in Nairobi. In collaboration with the Chiromo Hospital Group and the Nairobi Metropolitan Services, the program focused on the management of engagement with staff and work-life balance. The introduction started with attendees voluntarily speaking on their experience with mental health issues. This icebreaking activity helped those in attendance freely share and engage in the training.

The workshop consisted of two components: mental health sensitization of the person and staff management and how to make work a mental health safe space. Facilitators took the HCWs through sessions on rejuvenation and motivation, on caring for adolescents in facilities, and on caring for the carers.

Attendees also discussed the definition of mental health and the types of mental health conditions. This included the use of proper terms, such as “died by suicide” instead of “committed suicide” and “lived experience” instead of “had mental issues.” This exercise served to demystify mental health and help tackle the stigma that prevents HCWs from talking about what they may be going through.

There is more training slated for the future, as HCWs had previously expressed the need for periodic workshops and satisfaction with the training. Through this, Ciheb-Kenya aims to continue being a key stakeholder in the advocacy for HCW mental health and improving the quality of life for its staff and partners.

    Medically Assisted Therapy Clinic in Kenya Empowers Women

    In 2017, the Government of Kenya adopted a new policy called “A Framework for Pre-exposure Prophylaxis of IV in Kenya.” This framework directed the roll out of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in Kenya, addressing the key focus areas of: availability, acceptability, accessibility of PrEP, and the holistic integration into the national HIV combination prevention strategy. To align with the government, Ciheb in Kenya’s PACT Endeleza program, which recently ended, also started offering PrEP that same year.

    During the summer, the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) held its annual Health Service Delivery Awards to recognize best-performing health facilities in Nairobi County. Facilities supported by PACT Endeleza won awards in all categories they participated in. NMS evaluated facilities based on their performance in continuous quality improvement metrics.

    Ciheb-Kenya on the Front Lines of the COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout

    Ciheb-Kenya, our local Kenyan partner, has been working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Kenya Ministry of Health, and the National Vaccines and Immunization Programme (NVIP) to support COVID-19 vaccine preparedness through the ongoing Technical Assistance to Ready and Accelerate Capacities of Public Health Programs in Kenya (TRACK) project. Kenya received its first shipment of vaccines several weeks ago and has been moving ahead quickly. As of April 21, a total of 721,509 persons have been vaccinated against COVID-19 countrywide.
