After a one month pause, the Zambia Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (ZAMPHIA) is prepared to restart field data collection in September. The survey now enters its final stage of field work following a break in August for the 2021 Zambian general elections.
Thus far, the field teams have surveyed over 204 clusters and reached more than 10,000 participants, 6,000 households, and completed over 5,000 household interviews.
This next phase of field work will see the field teams resume using COVID-19 mitigation measures and should last about 11 weeks with all teams including mapping and listing, community mobilization, field, and laboratory teams working simultaneously to ensure smooth roll-out and implementation.
The PEPFAR-funded survey is assessing the prevalence and incidence of HIV, assessing the coverage and impact of HIV services, and characterizing HIV-related risk behaviors using a nationally representative sample of adults aged 15 years and older. ZAMPHIA will assess progress towards achievement of the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets on national and subnational levels. The data will be used to focus HIV services and resources to the areas of greatest need and help move Zambia closer to HIV epidemic control.

ZAMPHIA Survey Begins Fieldwork
The Zambia Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment (ZAMPHIA) is now underway! The survey was originally scheduled to take place in 2020 but was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now that COVID-19 in Zambia has improved, the Government of Zambia, in partnership with Ciheb and others, is moving forward with the relaunch of this PEPFAR-funded assessment and have put in place all necessary safety measures to protect staff and participants. ZAMPHIA is the second ever population-based HIV impact assessment performed in Zambia.
